What do yoopers say?

'Yoopernese' is the dialect you'll hear in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The accent is heavily influenced by the area's Scandinavian immigrants, so they say 'yah' instead of yeah, “d” for “th” (“dere” for there, “dat” for “that”) and 'eh' at the end of most sentences.

We can't hear our own accents, or even the way our voices sound to others, because we can only hear ourselves speak within the resonance chamber called our skulls. You can only hear your voice as it really is by recording it and listening to it.

2. Yooper = Upper Peninsula resident. A Yooper is anyone who lives in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula. It's a dialect all of its own!

Fudgie. Perhaps the best known of northern Michigan nicknames, a fudgie is a person visiting our area. The nickname grew out of the simple fact that most people don't manage to leave without first buying fudge. Indeed, thousands of rectangular pounds of the sweet stuff are exported every year.

Research has shown that accents become permanent around the age of 12 years old. That being said, it is possible for accents to change over time or for adults to develop a subtle accent after living in a foreign country for an extended period of time.

The patient with dysprosody will generally sound “monotone,” unable to change the affective tone of voice as requested. Though changes in softness and loudness of speech still occur, the actual tonality does not vary.

The answer is no. After your early teens, the chance of learning to speak a new language without an accent is vanishingly small. Not only the speech sounds but also the rhythm and intonation will give you away. But many people find a foreign accent intriguing, even sexy.

19. To Michiganders The “Door Wall” Is The Sliding Door. In certain places in Michigan, locals call what most out-of-towners know as a “sliding door” a “door wall.” Using the term door wall around a visitor to the state is sure to get some strange looks.

You may have noticed that the way Canadians speak is changing and the reason why words sound different these days is because linguists have confirmed we're going through the Canadian Vowel Shift. "Milk" is being pronounced more like "melk." The word "dress" is starting to sound like "drass."

Trolls is the Yooper term for Michiganders who live below the Mackinac Bridge because afterall, only trolls live under bridges. This means any person who lives in the lower peninsula has earned the nickname "Trolls" courtesy of our friends from the north.

The most common theory seems to be that when you open the container, the compressed CO2 makes a “POP!” sound. The term is prevalent far outside Michigan, by the way.

Marquette. The most populated city in the Upper Peninsula is Marquette, a major iron ore shipping port on Lake Superior. Known for lake trout, salmon, whitefish and brown trout fishing, Marquette is often listed among the top places in America to retire and provides residents with ample opportunities to get outside.

Michigan pasties are a whole meal folded into a pastry shell. Most commonly they are filled with beef and root vegetables then baked until tender. These handheld meat pies are popular with my Yooper neighbors to the north in the upper peninsula of Michigan who made these portable meals for Cornish miners.
